Week #49 The World According To Wayne White

Week #49 The World According To Wayne White

This past weekend was so exciting with so much going on in Dufferin County. On Saturday, the Orangeville Curling Club hosted their annual Pond Spiel at Island Lake Conservation Area. According to Club Manager, Cindy Glassford, the ice was in ideal condition for curling. The event attracted curlers from as far away as Ottawa. The sport of curling originated on ponds which is the main attraction for the local “Pond Spiel”.

While out taking photos of the Pond Spiel I couldn’t help notice the large number of fishing huts on the lake. I did capture a few photos of people relaxing in folding chairs while fishing. Now that is a true hardy Canadian experience. According to CVC park superintendent Yasmine Slater, the fish have been biting and one lucky person caught a 32 inch pike.

On Sunday the Town of Mono held their annual Winterfest at Mono Centre. The weather was perfect for tobogganing, cross country skiing, horse drawn wagon rides and ice skating. When I arrived many of the visitors were enjoying the wide assortment of food that was being offered inside Mono Centre hall. A fan favourite was Mayor Ryan’s home cooked baked beans. Outside, hot apple cider was being served by MPP Sylvia Jones. Bob Shirley and Harvey Clark were on site chipping Christmas trees. This event provided lots of fun for the whole family.

Before venturing out to Winterfest, Wanda and I took our dog Syndey for a walk on the Island Lake trails. We met a group of men riding their fat bikes. During our brief conversation they stated that they have been frequently riding their fat bikes at Island Lake along with their wives. As we continued on with our walk, we met up with Steve Hunter who was out running in preparation for his upcoming 100 mile race.

Dufferin County offers an abundance of fun activities for those who are willing to brave winter conditions. Don’t forget Island Lake Conservation Area is offering lots of activities on Family Day!
