Island Lake Conservation Area in Mono is now open for ice fishing. CVC Regional Manager, Bill Lidster, reports that there is over 28 cm of ice. Last year the ice didn’t reach the required thickness until after the second week of January. On Thursday, January 4th the lake was already dotted with many portable fishing huts. The Credit Valley Conservation Area staff are now in the process of moving their blue huts onto the lake and ready for rent.

The services provided at Island Lake in Mono include the following: hole augering ($1.77 per hole), live minnows ($6.19 a dozen), heated ice hut rentals ($36 per adult for a full day and $26 per adult for a half day) and Eskimo Quick fish pop-up tents are also available for rent.

The blue huts include pre-drilled holes, propane heaters, 2 windows per hut, benches, coat hooks and there is one wheel chair accessible hut. The huts are large enough for four adults. Rental is daily from 8:00 am until 5:30 pm.

If you bring along some of your younger children they can rent kicksleds for $10 per hour or $25 per day which will help keep them entertained when the fish aren’t biting.

Island Lake is offering three “Moonlight Events” on January 27th, February 3rd and February 24th. Events include skating on the Island Lake trail and ice fishing. Wanda and I along with our four grandchildren really enjoyed skating under the moonlight last year. It was indeed cold in Mono but it was so exciting to be out skating on the lake with only headlamps.

Be sure to try ice fishing. You never know, you may just get hooked.
